Well we went in for Ethan’s appointment with the neurosurgeon on the 12th. He didn’t really give us very much more info than we knew. He did give us an estimated size of the cyst. It’s about 5-6 cm by 6 cm or so. So it’s BIG. It fills almost a 4th of this brain.
We talked about the surgery. We will probably end up doing the craniotomy fenestration. This is were the doctor will make a large incision on the left side of Ethan’s head, probably about 3 inches long. Then they will cut out a quarter sized part of his skull. They have to cut open the membrane that covers his brain to get to the cyst. After they get to the cyst they will open it and let it drain and then cut out all the walls of the cyst so that it doesn’t just close back up and make another cyst.
Hopefully since Ethan is so young and still developing, his brain will fill in the empty space so there is no room for another cyst to form.
We have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:45 AM. Ethan will be sedated for this. And after that we go in to see his neurosurgeon again and will hopefully set up a surgery time.
I am hoping to get this taken care of ASAP. I can already see that the left side of his head is growing out further than the right. It’s right above his ear. They say that the head should grow to a normal size after they cyst is removed. Shrinks back or something?
Anyways. I will update later after the MRI and appointment. Hopefully we will get more info then!
